The objective of the project is two fold.
1st to reduce the health risks related to the collection and processing of municipal waste in the greater Mogadishu area and to improve medical waste management practices in the city’s hospitals.
Secondly, adopting the training-of-trainers principle for capacity building which will ensure the level of knowledge and awareness on H&S can be kept at the required level. New staff can be trained by in-house trainers, and existing staff will receive refresher training if needed. Company technicians and operators will receive in-depth technical training, enabling them to maintain the medical waste treatment equipment. These measures will allow Mogadishu Waste to function largely independently from external partners.
Project :
The project is envisaged as a driver of social and economic recovery in Mogadishu by improving the health and safety (H&S) position of its population.
The project is building capacity of Mogadishu Waste staff, by improving the company’s H&S protocols; by training the company staff in H&S procedures for the collection and processing of waste; and by making protective gear available for all operators and collectors.
In addition, the company is engaging in the management of medical waste, by installing collection and processing equipment, and by training the technical and operating staff in the operation and maintenance of the equipment.
The project is furthermore providing dedicated medical waste collection bins and containers to hospitals and clinics, and training to hospital staff on the separation of different types of medical waste for free.
